WHO AM I?
I’m Courtney (CJ), hey! I’m on a mission to knock down 30 states and 30 countries before the end of my 30th year on this beautiful planet. I have a little less than 3 years to go as I turn 30 on April 21, 2019. As of June 2016, I have seen 28 states and 8 countries. I was born in New Jersey, but you'd never be able to tell by the way I represent Texas, Houston specifically. I went to the University of Miami (Go Canes) and majored in Psychology. I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and a huge supporter of the National Urban League. The Dallas Cowboys are going to win the next Super Bowl and I'm obsessed with Serena Williams.
WHEN DID I BEGIN TRAVELLING?
For as long as I can remember, my family and I have made road-trips up and down the East Coast for family reunions. My mother says I went on a plane when I was a child, but I do not remember that and therefore attribute my first plane ride taking place when I was 18, on my way to Miami for college.
WHEN WAS MY FIRST INTERNATIONAL TRIP?
March 2015. So I have been at this international quest for approximately a year and a half.
WHY THIRTY BY 30?
I love a good challenge, and I also want to catch up and #SeeSomeWorld. I spent too long thinking I could never afford travel so I spent my money on other foolery instead of flights. I did not come up with the concept, but I think it’s a dauntingly great task that I welcome whole heartedly. I’m not in it to make folks feel bad about their lack of stamps; I am doing this because my spirit is happy when I’m in new and beautiful places.
DO I HAVE A DAY JOB?
Yes! I work in a public school district in Dallas as a Campus Instructional Coach. That is where I make my money for the time being but I absolutely love my students and the community in which I work in.
WHAT ARE MY HOBBIES?
I enjoy reading, being a beach bum, hunting for dope street art, working out, socializing at Happy Hour, scrapbooking, taking pictures, volunteering with Urban League Young Professionals, and planning future trips. One of my new hobbies (whether I like it or not) will be studying for the GMAT.
To be fair, my favorite US city that I have not lived in is New Orleans. My favorite city that I have visited abroad is hands down Cartagena, Colombia.
I’m a fan of hot places with warm water and cold beverages. I like a stress-free trip with a loose itinerary (if there’s one at all). Some place where there’s somewhat of a nightlife so that I can get down and dance if necessary helps too.
CRAZIEST TRAVEL MOMENT?
I think a lot of people would say it was when I decided to go to 7 islands by myself, but I would say, it was when around midnight on a Sunday the streets of Cartagena blacked out. It was the most bizarre occurrence but prayerfully, there was a cab across the street that rescued us.
WHAT IS MY PURPOSE FOR THIS SITE?
I hope that I can inspire urban travelers, female travelers, and travelers of color to step outside of their comfort zone and #SeeSomeWorld . I have no idea what took me so long to apply for my passport but it has been the best (worst for my wallet) thing I could have done. There is so much of God’s beauty to see from ocean to ocean and I adore being a part of the travel community. You don't have to be rich; you simply need the desire.
